When "snapshot" represents a word of "spontaneous-photo-taking" since the last century, it has been being a specific genre in photographic art, and of course, there are many different types of snapshot such as street photography, Lomography, family photo, etc., and they all rely on several criteria.

Firstly, Timeliness (天時). When it is the right timing, one would be able to capture the most appropriate and significant moment with holding whichever type of camera. Secondly, Topographical Advantages (地利) is another factor which determents what quality of result would appear in photographs. For instant, light source and wind direction; quality of air, temperature and humidity; what is in the present and how it preforms the way, these all matter to an image. Last but not least, People (人和), which plays a significant role of making an photograph, possibly the easiest idea for us to understand. For example, people are captured in the photographs by a photographer for people to view.

In collusion of these three elements, a unique phenomenon is created. The crucial stage of forming an image is based upon a set of finger muscles, which controlled by one’s brain. Whether it’s a sentimental or rational prepose, there is an intension behind the act of triggering the shutter. At the moment, Henri Cartier-Bresson's idea of Decisive Moment is critical to the birth of a photograph. In addition, one’s photographic knowledge, technique, sense of composition and experience are similar to human chromosome, which determine the result of what image quality the photograph should be. As if the photograph inherits the genes of the creator and narrates stores of itself.

We alway inadvertently miss what's surrounding us, especially something behind us. This project was trying to put all the above elements and genes together in the holistic perspective, as far as this project concerted, Chance becomes the rationale of its framework. By utilising photography to hunt the Chance, to capture every "intersection" of our daily trajectories, each photograph symbolises a serendipity, and this unique situation is created with favorable confluence of timing, appropriate location and the right people. In fact, what this photographic project is trying to question that does the random connections we made on the road "by chance”, or it is our destiny to meet at designated time and location? What are people thinking whilst waiting for a traffic light and how their thinking affect our random connections on the road?

Inspired by project Semi-Unconscious (2004-2006), Idling is a project which captures the drivers behind my vehicle whilst wanting for traffic lights. This project took 2 years (2009 - 2011) to finish and over 8 thousands images were captured.
